Clearing the Air with a Plant

Generally when we talk about air purification via plants, we are talking about street trees, forests, and vast green spaces. Most of the plants people keep indoors are for design and decoration purposes and their restorative benefits are an added benefit.  People actually buy air purifiers to do the work that plants do in the natural world.

Enter Andrea: The first plant based indoor air purifier. Developed as a collaboration between an artist and a scientist, this gadget utilizes the capabilities of plants to cleanse indoor air. The Andrea is 40% more effective at removing certain polluting particles than other air purifiers. For details of the technology, visit their technology tab on their website. But essentially, the plant’s natural processes, with a little help from the machine, fully eliminates the waste rather than catch it in a filter.

Holiday gift? I would be happy with it. Their site lists availability.

  1. Very cool. There are several plants that are known air cleaners, and they should be in every home and office. The easy to grow Pothos, and Spider plants, and Peace Lillies are home favorites and very easy to take care of (they live through almost anything and require very little light). All three of those plants are very well known as air cleaning plants. Three spider plants breathe out as much oxygen in a day as one human being will breathe in.
