Volcanoes and Vegetables and Volatility
I saw this great graphic on Information is Beautiful over the weekend, that shows the difference in CO2 emissions in one week, from the volcano or the European aviation industry. Thought provoking and pretty. There are discussions in the comments section about how accurate this is.
But what was is even more interesting than complete accuracy, is impact. Kenya’s agricultural industry has laid off 5,000 workers due to the loss of transport capacity for their flowers and produce. The country is losing $1.3 million a day in flowers alone. Over 97% of the flowers grown in Kenya are EU bound.
We have heard a lot about vacations turned up side down or business men stranded, but clearly the impacts of disruptions do not stop there. Just another reminder of the depth of connections that exist in the free-market web of life.
