Compost Collection Expanded Across the City!

Most New Yorkers don’t know how many states our waste gets outsourced to.  In my experience, when they learn that our daily production of 24 million tons of garbage goes to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, and of course upstate New York, they pause and think that is certainly not the best news. Some go one step further and think, well, how can we stop this madness!?  The first step of course is to think about what is actually in the waste stream. About 20% of the New York City waste stream is organic materials, that can be composted. So, only logical conclusion is: compost it!

It is great news then that GrowNYC is expanding its compost drop off program to various green markets across the city. You can now drop off household organic wastes at: Inwood, Tribeca, Abingdon Square, McCarren Park, Grand Army Plaza, and Brooklyn Borough Hall. Yay!

This is a 4 month long pilot project, so the more we use it, the more likely we are to have the programs keep going and expand further into neighborhoods that need it. For more information about what you can bring to the markets and the best way to store the scraps at home, check out the pilot project website.  And for tons of information as to why composting just makes sense, visit the NYC Compost Project’s website.
